Wiegand Gallery - Mission Statement

The Gallery's mission is to focus attention on the contributions and accpmplishments of important artists who are less recognized, as well as to exhibit lesser-known works of established artists. Highly acclaimed artists whose works have been exhibited at Wiegand Gallery include Wayne Thiebaud, Nathan Oliveira, Manuel Neri, Stephanie Sanchez, Sam Hernandez, and John Walker. The Wiegand Gallery has established a national reputation for the catalogues that are published wit these exhibitions.

History

The Wiegand Gallery, located in the heart of the peninsula, on the campus of Notre Dame de Namur University, has an outstanding reputation in the community as a venue primarily for California an Bay Area twentieth- century art.  Since it's opening in 1987, the gallery is dedicated to changing exhibitions  that exemplify  a broad range of artistic expression.

The Wiegand Gallery is part of the Madison Art Center, a magnificent stone building that was originally built as a carriage house on the site of the country estate of the twentieth- century financier William Chapman Ralston.  The exhibition space, with it's porthole windows and skylights, is unusually warm, inviting enviroment  in which to experience art.  As a place of cultural exchange and educational programming, the Wiegand Gallery compliments Notre Dame de Namur's growing academic program in the visual and performing arts.

Named for the E.L. Wiegand Foundation, which provided generous funding toward the renovation and subsequent support, the gallery is operated on a non- profit basis and depends on foundation grants and individual and corporate contributions.
